Offaly is a county is the Republic of Ireland and is situated in the middle of the island of Ireland. The county forms part of the province of Leinster and was originally known as the Kingdom of Uí Failghe. The population of the county is over 70,000 and the main town is Tullamore.

The Slieve Bloom Mountains occupy the southern part of the county and the floodplain of the River Shannon forms the northern part. The remaining part of the county is occupied by large bogs.

One of the county’s key locations is Birr Castle, notable for its plentiful gardens and immense castle. The castle is owned by the Parsons family (Earl of Rosse) and is significant for the use of a 19th century telescope.
